Timber frames
Please remember timber is a natural product with natural characteristics. Seasonal humidity changes may cause the wood to expand and contract and a small amount of movement in timber in these circumstances is absolutely normal. Fine surface checks can occur and may disappear and reappear during seasons of high and low humidity as boards gain and lose tiny amounts of moisture.
Glazing
Your glass should be cleaned with a proprietary glass cleaning liquid or clean soapy water. Care should be taken when cleaning leaded lights or stained glass areas. No abrasive cleaners or solvents should be used.
Paintwork
Altus Services hardwood products are low maintenance and should give you years of trouble-free service. However a little extra care will help to keep your timber in good condition. Follow these simple guidelines and your unit will remain in excellent condition.
- Paintwork should be washed down regularly (at least twice a year) with soapy water.
- Any paint damage (as a result of the unit being knocked, dented or scratched) should be touched up with exterior touch-up paint immediately, as further damage may occur if left untreated.
Guttering and downpipes
Overflowing gutters can cause a lot of damage both inside and outside your home. We recommend that you clear out your gutters at the following times:
- Late autumn to remove the leaves before winter arrives and to check that the downpipes are draining freely.
- Late spring to remove the last debris of winter before summer arrives and also to discourage birds from nesting there.
At the very least, you should clean out your gutters once a year.
You can reduce the chances of gutters becoming blocked by using plastic mesh designed to prevent debris getting into the guttering.
Friction hinges
Maintenance is important but straightforward. Keep the friction stay track free from dirt and grime and keep the hinge mechanism clean. Lubricate the metal parts regularly with light oil, concentrating on the pivot points.
Friction can be increased or decreased by adjustment of the turning screw. Turn in a clockwise direction to increase friction. Take care not to over-tighten.
